The Alamo Civic Hackathon:

The Challenge: On Saturday, May 31st, 2014 a group of Alamo city citizens , software developers, and entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts gathered at the San Antonio Geekdom location to participate in 2014's National Civic Day of Hacking.
The civic request was that we find a way to better connect small business owners with civic opportunities. An additional challenge presented to the group was to explore a solution that would better enable specially classed businesses to become better informed about city opportunities of which they might otherwise be unaware.

The Solution: the Hackathon team brainstormed solutions and approaches during the morning and by the afternoon started developing the framework for this website. This site is designed as a "Civic Opportunities Board" that allows civic employees to add new opportunities to the board,
search and find registered businesses that fit their needs, and send notifications to applicable business owners. For business owners, this board allows for registration of their business and searching of opportunities within their industry specialization.

Impact: The number and type of specially-designated businesses currently being assisted by this web site are illustrated through the following chart:

Technical Details:

This app-site was developed 100% for free with the use of open source tools: The MS WebMatrix IDE was used to write ASP.NET framework code and mySQL was used for querying the SQL Server Compact database.
Project documentation is available at (forthcoming.ling) and source code is available at (forthcoming.link).
